Heidi now allows you to link specific content blocks of your note to designated sections in your EMR (e.g., Findings, Exam, Plan). This makes sending notes created on Heidi back to your Patient's medical record more streamlined, efficient and organised.

How to set up section links

Connect your EMR integration

EMR integrations are available for users on Together and Enterprise plans.

  1. Log in to your Heidi account

  2. Navigate to the Integrations tab in the sidebar

  3. Search for your EMR and follow the prompts to set up the integration

Enable the Enhanced Editor

To enable the features that allow for section linking - you need to enable our enhanced editor.

You will have this enabled on by default, to check or enable it again

  1. Navigate to Preferences

  2. Under Display Preferences look for the Use enhanced editor toggle

  3. Enable the feature by toggling it on

  4. Save your preferences.

⚠️ To use the sectional linking features - whether from a template or directly in the notes editor - you’ll need to enable this feature first otherwise it will not work and your notes will only be pushed to the first section of your EMR.

Create or Edit a Template

  1. Open a template in Heidi, you can create a new template or edit an existing one

  2. Highlight the block(s) of content in the template editor that you would like to link to a section in your EHR

  3. Click the link icon on the right-hand-side of the block

  4. Select the EHR section from the drop down menu where you want this content to appear (e.g., Findings, Exam, Plan)

  5. The linked section will now be displayed in the block. Don't forget to save your template!

When you use this template, the content created from it will be automatically linked to the sections specified in the template. If you add additional content to the note, you'll need to manually link it from the template editor within the session (see below)

Tips for linking sections:

Use your mouse to highlight multiple blocks, then link them all to sections using the dropdown in the menu that pops up.

You can show and hide the linked sections using the button in the bottom left corner, to allow you to focus on editing the content of your template.

Linking within the session

ℹ️ You can only link sections from within the 'Note' tab within Heidi. If you make a new tab and generate a note, the sectional linking features will not work, even if you're using a template with section links.

  1. Click the dropdown on the “Push to [Your EMR]" button on the top right of your note area. (Note: You’ll get a quick preview of linked items while hovering over the Push button)

  2. Select "Show links" from the dropdown list.

  3. Any linked blocks will now appear in green. You can now create links to sections, or change any existing links by clicking on the linked section title, or link icon, like you did in the template editor.

  4. You can hide the links again when you're done by clicking the dropdown button again and selecting "Hide links." Links will still be pushed when they are hidden, they are just out of the way for you to focus on editing your note.

How to Push the note

  1. Generate a note using your linked template or by manually linking them from within the notes editing area.

  2. When you’re finished editing your note, click the 'Push to EHR' button

  3. The linked sections will appear in green for you to check that they are linked to the correct sessions.

  4. Press "Confirm & Push" to send the note to the linked sections in your EMR

  5. You'll receive a success message when the push was successful

Important:

If you encounter an error

  • Check that your sections are linked correctly.

  • You have the Enhanced Editor toggled On.

  • Your integration is set up correctly and that you are connected to the internet.

If you continue to encounter an error while pushing, let us know.

FAQs

Who can use this feature?

EHR integrations are available for users on our Together or Enterprise plans.

Which EHRs are supported?

Currently, this is only supported with the Athena Integration. We're working on adding this for other integrations as well!

Can I edit links after creating a note?

Yes, you can modify the links for each section directly within the note before sending it to the EHR. To do this, click the dropdown on the "Push to [EHR]" button and select "Show links". This will reveal any existing links in green and allow you to link blocks to sections of the EMR by hovering over them and clicking the link icon on the right.

What type of blocks can be linked?

Each EMR has limitations on the type of content supported. At this time, you can push any text based blocks. You cannot push tables, images or dividers to any of the EMRs that support section linking. You can also only push clinical notes at this stage.

What happens if I exceed an EHR section’s character limit?

If there is an error with pushing the note, Heidi will automatically notify you. You can adjust the note accordingly and push again.

How do I know if my note was successfully uploaded?

You will see a confirmation message in Heidi once the note has been pushed to the EHR.

What kind of templates can I add linked sections to?

You can set up links for any kind of template, but only the core note can be pushed.

What kinds of outputs can be pushed?

Right now you can only push the core note you create on Heidi to your EMR. To ensure a template is used as your core note, make it your default template, or select that template for use on the tab titled "Note"

What if I push a note without linking any sections?

If you haven't linked any sections, and you press "Push to [Your EMR]" the entire note will be pushed to the first section in your EMR. Please note if some sections are linked, and not others, the content not linked will not be pushed.

What if it fails to push?

If you receive a "push failed" message there may be an issue with your connection, or the setup of your integration. Check your connection, and if this error continues, please get in touch with our team to take a look into the problem.
