What is dictation?
Dictation is a feature where Heidi will write out word-for-word anything you say. Dictation is best used for scribing letters, and summaries for yourself.
๐ก For consults with patients we always recommend using the transcribe tool.
Choose between our two Dictation templates, Smart Dictation, and Word - for - Word. Smart Dictation has been built by our Heidi Team to get the most out of the dictation tool. Experiment with which one is right for you!
How do I dictate?
To use dictation:
If you have toggled on 'Recording settings prompt'.
Go to Settings โ Session settings โ Recording settings prompt
This will ensure you see the pop-up at the beginning of each session where you can decide if you want to transcribe or dictate.
When you click on the Dictate option, you'll be able to choose the language that you will be dictating in and ensure your microphone input is correct.
Once you have your settings checked click 'Start recording'.
If you want to bypass the pop-up, you can select how you want to take the consult by clicking on the arrow in the top right hand side beside the start button.
When you stop the Dictation, Heidi will produce a word-for-word document, similar to a script!
๐ฃ To create a document or use templates after you dictate, click on 'Create document'!
Can I use dictation for free
Your initial Dictation notes are always free, and you can generate as many as you'd like at no cost, forever.
However, applying a note to a dictation is classified as a "Pro Action," even if you're using a default Heidi template. When working with Dictation, your free note is the dictation itself. Any additional document created from it will count as a Pro Action.
Think of the Dictation feature as applying one of two templatesโSmart Dictation or Word-for-Wordโto your transcript. For consultations with patients, we recommend using the Transcribe tool for accuracy and completeness.

Enable Dictation playback
In Heidi, you can allow a recording when using our dictation feature to save to the session.
โ
Opting in will store recordings of your dictations. This allows you or your staff to play back and verify the accuracy of dictations. You must get consent to record patients speaking.
Note: Audio playback is only available on dictation, when you have opted in. Without this setting toggled on, audio files are destroyed after the transcription success.
